With the aim of serving the society, Toyota Kirloskar Motor Pvt. Ltd (TKM), who is in the business of manufacture and sales of automobiles and automobile components in India, has taken ownership of many local community development activities as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative. TKM as part of its CSR activity supported the Education Department in Ramanagara District for the construction of toilets for girl students for better sanitation and hygiene practices as part of “Swach Bharat- Swach Vidyalaya.” As a response, the Education Department identified 102 schools where they required additional toilets for girls from 3 Taluks namely, Magadi, Ramanagara and Kanakapura. Totally 102 Government schools were selected and planned to construct 250 toilets out of which 240 were completed in the first phase. Subsequently, TKM planned to provide software components to ensure sustainable use of toilets with proper behavior change through SNEHA, an NGO working in the field of Water and Sanitation (WATSAN). TKM conceived the project as “A Behavioral Change Demonstration (ABCD)” to bring positive behavior change through proper toilet utilization by the children in schools and to establish O & M involving all stakeholders wherein the demonstration has played a vital role to bring a sustainable change.
The ABCD program was executed from June 2015 to May 2016.
Since June 2015 SNEHA has been working with school children on behavior changes of use and maintaining of toilets constructed by TKM. Further, it has trained motivated and deployed ABCD trainers in the schools for educating the students on the importance of use of Toilets and maintaining personal hygiene in the schools. It is evident that the school children have become change agents through making their parents and the entire community aware of the better hygiene practices.
